A Lawrence native since age five, Laura Porter attended the University of Kansas, where she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts, in addition to a Bachelor of Visual Arts Education, certified in K-12. Laura started her teaching career at the former South Junior High School where her beloved art teacher was retiring, coming full circle. During her time teaching in the Lawrence public school system, she especially embraced teaching the energetic, never-a-dull-moment, age group in middle school. During her 16 years of teaching middle schoolers, Laura began a mural producing program where her art students painted more than 125 murals.  When another former art teacher of Laura's retired from the Lawrence Alternative High School, Laura experienced the rewards of working with high school students representing a variety of social, health, economic, and learning challenges. She started teaching at Seabury in 2005 and has absolutely loved being a part of building the Seabury culture that exists today. It is the best teaching environment one could hope for, thanks to exceptional collegiality and invested leadership. Laura is married to Stadium Barber Shop owner Rex, has four wonderful adult children, a lovable rescue dog, and a princessy/beastly cat. Laura loves to travel and seek adventure, garden, read, do freelance artwork, and enjoys game nights with family and friends.
