What is Summer at the Academy?

These are small classes, clinics and workshops that are nothing but piles of fun and stimulating learning activities.  All held on Bishop Seabury Academy’s campus.

 

What are the Choices?

 

#1  Learning the Lingo

Get a jump start on learning Latin the Seabury way.  We will focus on learning Latin vocabulary and Latin roots in our language.  The class will introduce students to learning an inflected language and basic Latin endings.  We will read and translate from the Cambridge Latin text and use vocabulary workbooks.  This course is a great introduction to learning the Latin language and word etymologies.  This course is designed for incoming 7th graders, but is open to any students.

#11  Survival Spanish

¡Hola! In this camp, we’ll practice basic Spanish vocabulary and grammar used in everyday situations, such as eating at a restaurant or asking for directions.  We’ll also sample foods from a variety of regions and learn more about culture in Spain and Latin America. This camp is intended for students with little or no prior Spanish knowledge.  ¡Vamonos!

#2 Write It Right

A highly individualized class intended to prepare students for the grammatical challenges of writing.  Each of the 12 lessons will deal with mechanical issues such as capitalization, punctuation and usage.  Each session will include one-on-one proofreading of a short writing assignment.  Parents will be given a summary of their student’s strengths and weaknesses concerning grammar. 

 

Meets Mondays and Wednesdays 9-11am starting June 2 and ending July 9.  Fee $110. Minimum enrollment of 5.

#12  Homer’s Iliad 

Come and read Homer’s Iliad in the original ancient Greek!  After a brief introduction to the Greek alphabet and grammar, we will begin our readings.  The opening lines of Iliad reveal the wrath of Achilles and troubles that plague the Greek army at Troy.   No Greek language experience necessary, we are simply reading for the pure joy of reading Homer in his native language.  Text and vocabulary will be provided.  Challenge your linguistic fitness with this unique camp.

#3 Girls Basketball Camp

Calling all girls who want to get a start on next year’s season!  Coach Nick Taylor will be teaching the fundamentals that will take you to the next level.  A 3v3 tournament will round out the week.  Come sharpen your skills.

#13  Lake Explorers

Have you ever wondered exactly what is in Clinton Lake?  How about Potter’s Lake, the public pool, or even your own bathtub? We’ll spend the week testing a variety of water samples, learning more about water ecosystems, and discovering what we can do to help keep our water supply clean.  Come learn more about the largest component of you body—water!

#4  Cheerleading Camp

Go! Fight! Win! Come learn the basic elements of cheerleading, including cheer, chants, jumps, 8 count dance routines, and a halftime performance.  Stunts and tumbling are not included in the camp, and no prior cheer experience is necessary.  Let’s get cheering!

#14  United States War in Film

This thematic week will look at a new conflict in US history each day and how the conflict has been portrayed in film.  Historical background of the conflict will be discussed prior to viewing the clips and analysis of the historical accuracy as well as the influence on the public will follow.

 

Due to the mature content of the subject matter and many of the clips, this camp is for grades 10-12 only.

#5 Got Latin!

Come and meet Caecilius, a Pompeian business man, and his family!  We will cover Stages 1-12 in the Cambridge Latin Series and we will learn all about Pompeian culture.  Students will learn basic grammar and vocabulary.   This course would be great for students who want a comprehensive introduction to Latin or would like to reinforce their knowledge of Latin.

#15 Ciao Italiano!

Do you like cappuccino?  How about pasta?  What about pizza and gelato?  If so then come and learn some Italian!  We will learn how to order food and coffee at a café, describe friends and family members, and so much more.  This class will be a great introduction to Italian language and culture (no Italian language experience necessary).  Text and vocabulary will be provided.

 

July 7-11, Afternoons 1-4 pm, Fee $134

#6 More Art, More Fun

For the highly motivated artist—this class will yield a quality self-portrait and at least one piece of sterling silver jewelry.  Studio hours can be extended based upon need.

#16  Discover the Sounds of French

Learn to identify and pronounce French sounds and words.  Learn the letters, the numbers, days of the week, colors, simple sentences and more through the use of songs, limericks, and stories.

#7 Writer’s Workshop

Are you interested in learning more about fiction writing?  Do you want to share your short stories, poems, or screenplays with other authors?  Then this camp is for you!  We’ll work on writing a variety of forms of fiction from start to finish, including making our own paper journals.  Write On!

#17   Discover Asterix

Explore French culture’s similarities and differences from our own.  Prepare and taste a French dish.  Learn basic French structure and vocabulary through the use of songs and games.

#8  Love to Learn Latin!  

Come and learn about the Roman Baths in England!  In this class, we will explore beyond the basics of Latin grammar and readings.  We will cover chapters 13-17 in the Cambridge Latin series.  For students who has some Latin experience or who have taken the “Got Latin” course.  This class is for any student who loves Latin and wishes to take it to the next level. 

 

June 16-20, Mornings 9-noon, Fee $134

# 18  Write It then Act It!

This workshop is meant for rising 6th graders and 7th graders who have little to no acting experience.  The class will write a one-act play with parts for each participant.  Learning and rehearsing the play will include stagecraft and emoting skills.  The completed play will be presented for family and friends. 

 

July 14-25, Afternoons 1-3pm with an evening performance

#9 Football Mini-Camp

The camp is an opportunity for prospective football players to learn fundamentals of the game, try out some different positions, and learn basic plays and practice structure. Students who will be playing football in the Fall are STRONGLY recommended to attend if at all possible. Activities in the camp will but not limited to: speed and agility drills, position specific drills, basic plays and friendly competitions. This will be a helmets only camp.

#10 Dig This!

The purpose of this camp is to teach the basic skills and fundamentals of serving, passing, setting, hitting, and blocking. The camp will also include such things as team offense and team defense. We will cap the week off with a tournament.

*Please note that because Bishop Seabury is a 9-12 high school, I have included 9th graders in the high school session. If you would like your ninth graders to attend the junior high session please note that on the registration form. Those forms can be picked up at Bishop Seabury from Athletic Director Eric Nelson.

Seabury Summer Instructors:

Amy Meyers has eight years teaching experience, a M.A. in Classical Languages from the University of Kansas and a B.A in History from Penn State University. In addition to Latin and Ancient Greek literature, she has reading proficiency in German and French. Amy has traveled to France, Greece, Italy, and England on academic trips over the past 10 years. Currently, she teaches 8th -12th grade Latin at Bishop Seabury Academy and is also the Chair of the Foreign Language Department there. (amymeyers@seaburyacademy.org)

Kristina Clement is a student at The University of Kansas who has completed the coursework for her Italian BA. She is currently working on completing an Honors Thesis in Italian and will graduate this year. Kristina has led high school students on summer study tours, has studied Italian in Florence, and has vacationed in Italy on numerous occasions. For the past two years, Kristina has tutored students in Italian and in the last year has been teaching Italian to a high school student. Kristina will study in Rome in 2008 to enhance her language skills even further before entering graduate school to pursue her MA and PhD in Italian Language and Literature. (kclement@live.com)


Nick Taylor Coach Taylor has been coach at Bishop Seabury Academy for past 9 years in a variety of sports. He has coached the Girls Basketball team for the past three years. (nick10.taylor@gmail.com)

Laura Porter has a wealth of teaching experience. Before coming to Seabury she taught Art at Southwest Junior High. She is an amazing artist and an excellent teacher. She has been teaching Art at Seabury for the past three years. ( lauraporter@seaburyacademy.org  )

Elaine Jardon is currently pursuing her M.S.Ed in Literacy Education at the University of Kansas and received a B.S.E in Secondary Language Arts from KU as well. During her time at KU, Elaine served as one of the KU mascots. She is a certified flat-water canoe instructor and has spent the last three summers teaching canoeing, kayaking, and sailing lessons. During the 2008-2009 school year, she will be teaching Language Arts at Topeka High School in Topeka, Kansas. (ejardon@ku.edu )

Mireille Green, MA in French literature, is a native French speaker, who has taught French for many years in the US. She has taught classes to preschool age children to university students. She is currently teaching French levels I to IV at Bishop Seabury Academy.

Werner Anderson has countless years of teaching experience in a variety of fields. He currently serves as the Dean of Students at Bishop Seabury. He also teachers 8th grade English and World Religions. He also has experience with Lower school drama and coaching football. (werneranderson@seaburyacademy.org )

 

Sara Asher has been teaching for 9 years with the last 6 at Seabury. She has taught AP history during her years at Seabury and has been a reader for AP history for the past 3 years. In 2002 and 2003, she was a State and Regional History Day judge. She participated in the conference: “The War to End All Wars: WWI and Its Aftermath” Summer Teacher’s Conference 2007. She has also attended the Korea Foundation Summer Institute in 2006.

Chrissy Leuty Has coached club volleyball in Lawrence for both the Lawrence Cardinals and more recently the Lawrence MAVS. I served as Assistant Varsity Coach/ Head JV at Baker University for one year. After leaving Baker, I took the Assistant Varsity coaching job at Lawrence High School and was there for 2 years until resigning my position in January of 2008 to become the new Head Volleyball Coach at Bishop Seabury Academy.
