What is Summer at the Academy? These are small classes, clinics and workshops that are nothing but piles of fun and stimulating learning activities. All held on Bishop Seabury Academy’s campus. What are the Choices? |
|
|
#1 Learning the Lingo Get a jump start on learning Latin the Seabury way. We will focus on
learning Latin vocabulary and Latin roots in our language. The class will
introduce students to learning an inflected language and basic Latin
endings. We will read and translate from the Cambridge Latin text and use
vocabulary workbooks. This course is designed for incoming 7th graders,
but is open to any students. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
#2 Study Skills—Fire them Up
Not sure how to study for junior high?
Do you feel like you’re studying, but you don’t seem to be getting
anywhere? Then fire up your study skills this summer. With fun reading
material, out-of-the-ordinary lectures, and hands-on practice, you’ll
learn some important stuff: how to get more out of what you read, how to
take better notes, and how to remember the important stuff come test time.
This course is designed for students coming to Seabury for the first time,
but it will be great for any student who wants to improve those study
skills, no matter where the student goes to school. No homework. Maximum
enrollment 12. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
#3 Got Latin!
Come and meet Caecilius, a Pompeian
business man, and his family! We will cover Stages 1-12 in the Cambridge
Latin Series and we will learn all about Pompeian culture. This course
would be great for students who want a comprehensive introduction to Latin
or would like to reinforce their knowledge of Latin. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
#4 Five Films Festival
Engage in lively discussion & film
analysis. Dr. Schawang will guide students through an examination of five
films (modern or classic) that will be selected with the participants. The
instructor will preface each film with interesting facts and draw
attention to cinematic techniques on display.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
#5 Math Buster!!!
Have fractions, decimals, algebraic expressions and word problems given
you nightmares??? Fear no more! Come to the Academy this summer and become
a Math Buster! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
#6 Getting Ahead in Algebra 1
Are you a math lover? Me too. The purpose of this class is to introduce
the fundamentals of algebra and to explore several applications to science
and physics. We will cover chapters 3 – 11 of the P.A. Foerster, Algebra
1, Expression, equations, and Applications text book. Computers and
graphing calculators will also be used to explore the relationships
algebra has to geometry. The class is also a great idea if you need to
brush up for Algebra 2 and beyond. Come and join us. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
#7 How do I write in junior high?
You’re not in grade school anymore. Writing for teachers in junior high
means you have to know the answers to these questions: What’s a thesis and
how do I write one? How do I develop my thoughts? What’s supposed to go in
my paragraphs or my conclusion? Through good discussions, lots of in-class
writing using computers, and reading examples of good writing, you’ll be
ready to tackle the writing assignments waiting for you at Seabury or in
whatever classroom you’ll call home. This class is highly recommended for
incoming Seabury students and especially for those who don’t feel
confident as writers, but the individualized approach will make all
students feel welcome. No homework. Maximum 12. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
#8 Script Writing
Are you a writer who loves the arts or an actor interested in writing?
Ever imagined writing for TV shows, the stage, or the big screen? This
class will give you the basics on script & screen writing. By the end of
this 4 week course, you will have a fully realized 10-minute scene of a
playscript, screenplay or teleplay. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
#9 Writing Intensive
Students, regardless
of ability level, will work closely with Judith Galas to learn or to
improve their non-fiction writing skills. Students will receive written
feedback throughout the week and one-on-one instruction. Parents will
receive a written assessment of the student’s abilities and suggestions
for future skill development. Because students will be expected to
complete assignments outside of class, only students who can make a week’s
commitment to focus on writing should enroll. In advance of the first
class period, students must bring a graded writing assignment from their
most recent school year and an explanation of what they wish to work on
during their writing intensive. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
#10 Love to Learn Latin!
Come and learn about
the Roman Baths in England! In this class, we will explore beyond the
basics of Latin grammar and readings. We will cover chapters 13-17 in the

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- #13 Algebra 2 and more.
If you’re really a math lover then this is the class for you. The purpose
of this program is to review and reinforce graphing techniques for
polynomials through the use of graphing calculators, the rational root

and graphing calculators will also be used to explore the relationships
Algebra 2 has to Geometry. We will also work with rational functions,
