Friday Letter

November 17, 2017

Dear Parents,

I hope you will be available to attend Late Night with the Seahawks tonight.  In lieu of an admission cost, we simply ask that you bring a few items to help with our Seabury item drive (see attached list).  Be prepared to see student antics, a spirited cheer squad, and our first view of the basketball teams!   And good luck to our basketball teams and thanks to our cheer squad as they all begin their seasons!

Our Debate team is still in the midst of their season of competition, and they took 1st place at the Blue Valley North tournament last weekend with freshmen partners Audrey Nguyen-Hoang and Morgan Orozco going undefeated and taking the top prize.  Congratulations!

Congratulations to our upper school actors for their work in Play On! last weekend and to our Seabury singers who performed at Brandon Woods and Trinity Episcopal Church.

Monday's Heritage Day is an event originally founded by students when we first moved to the Clinton Parkway campus.  It was originally named "Founder's Day" and included morning community service and an afternoon of presentations by seniors to remind students of the school's history and its mission.   Eventually, we reduced the presentations to morning video by the seniors and focused our attention on service work and rehearsal for our convocation ceremony.  This will be the format for Monday.  Students will be released at 12:30 pm (but it is okay if we have a few stragglers in the building for an hour or two).

And Tuesday will be our annual Convocation.  This event is a requirement for students, but I also want to encourage parents to attend if possible.  Our speaker this year will be Aaron Landis, the Director of Corporate Sponsorships at Austin Habitat for Humanity and Seabury alumnus, class of '03.  Once again, appropriate dress for students will include dress pants/slacks, jacket and tie, long dresses, and so forth--basically "business appropriate" for an office.  The students always look very impressive on this day.  I hope they (and you) will enjoy the ceremony.

On the week back from break, we will host our annual Science Fair.  Parents are welcome to come and visit the exhibits in our hallways on Thursday from 8:10-8:40 am (before students have to hustle on to class).

Thanks again to all who have contributed to the Seabury Fund - 50% of our parents so far!  We are only $44,000 from our goal, and every gift makes a difference.  As we look to wrap up the Fund Drive at the end of November, consider making an even greater impact through 11/30 thanks to the generous Hamm Family Challenge Gift!

Thanks to all who came out to Chipotle on Monday night for dinner.  If you ever wonder whether these franchise-based fundraising events make a difference, we raised almost $1,000 for the athletics program.  Thank you!

And finally, on Thursday morning, Krista Machado from DCCCA gave a presentation about prescription drug abuse prevention in morning meeting.  I have attached her power point presentation as well as questions asked anonymously by students in the follow-up advising group discussions.  Feel free to to continue this conversation at home.

I hope you have a good weekend.  Remember that you can contribute to our item drive as "entry fee" to Late Night tonight, and you can also bring items to the students sleeping outside on Saturday night!  Thanks to parents, students, staff, and friends of the school for helping us to help the Lawrence community!

Yours respectfully,

Dr. Schawang
