Friday Letter

May 10, 2019

Dear Parents,

This is the point in the year when I expect parents will benefit from the long view of the schedule, so you have the primary dates for the remaining weeks of school.  For those who have not attended the Stepping-Up ceremony, it is the most important ceremony we have at the school, as we celebrate our graduating seniors and advance each grade to their next level.  Students will be released to summer break at the conclusion of the event.  Parents are encouraged to attend.  Next week, I will provide more specifics about finals, Stepping-Up, and other year-end events.

Our parent participation in the campaign to expand our campus is up to 50%.  We only need 10% more (that is 17 parents!) to hit our goal of 60% by Stepping Up!  Please send in those pledge cards!   We need every one of those gifts!

Break-a-Leg to our cast of the Seabury spring theatre production, Our Town.  The Thorton Wilder play is a classic piece of American theatre that is endearing for its earnest portrayal of family and community while also treating its subject matter with a raw sincerity that still packs a punch.  The dinner associated with tonight's performance starts at 6:15 pm.  If you did not sign up for the dinner but want to attend tonight's production, you can show up closer to 7:30 pm.

Congratulations to Hilary Griggs on being one of only 7,500 seniors in the country to receive a National Merit Scholarship award "in recognition of academic promise and distinguished performance."  Good job!

Congratulations to our tennis team for taking 2nd place at State regional competition last week, and good luck to them as they head to State competition today!

Congratulations to Hilary Griggs for taking 2nd and Audrey Nguyen-Hoang for taking 5th in extemporaneous speaking at the 2A State Forensics Championship tournament last weekend.

Good luck to our Golf and Track Teams at regionals this week--and to our Swim Team as they head to State next weekend!  A lot of incredible athletic talent on display in the next week!

Wednesday will be our Seabury Awards Ceremony where we will recognize the outstanding academic achievements of our students.  (Senior achievements will primarily be recognized at Stepping Up the following week.)  Parents are welcome to attend the awards ceremony, which starts at 2:15 pm.  Seating is limited.

Thank you to Adrienne Karam for her great work as President of BSAP this year!  We enjoyed great school programming and parent involvement under her watch.  We look forward to having Cody Ross take the helm of our parents organization next year!

In last week's Friday Letter, I somehow omitted Anthony Howcroft from my list of departing teachers.  I will look forward to giving him and our other departing staff members an appropriate farewell at our Stepping-Up ceremony in two weeks.

And finally, congratulations to next year's student senate representatives who were elected this morning:

7th grade: Elyse Hammann and Josie Kim

8th grade: Hayden Slough and Isabel Klish

9th grade: Lear Eicher and Jason Meschke

10th grade: Shea Hanna and Jonah Kim

11th grade: Aris Grady and Lyle Griggs

12th grade: Ian Hanna and Kate Jackson

We look forward to seeing these students lead their respective grades next year!

Yours respectfully,

Dr. Schawang
