Friday Letter

March 9, 2018

Dear Parents,

As you can imagine, there is a distinctive energy in the air as we head off to spring break.  I congratulated the students and staff this morning for making it through the longest stretch of the year.

Good luck to our Chess and Powerlifting teams as they head to their respective State championship tournaments over the break!

Congratulations to performers for their great work last weekend in the upper school plays!

Madame Derby and I will be taking over twenty students to France over spring break.  I am glad that we can host these international trips, and I hope many of our students will be able to take advantage of this opportunity before they graduate from Seabury.

For most of the week, I was in St. Paul. MN leading a team of teachers and administrators from member schools of ISACS (our accreditation organization) to evaluate a school there.  Despite a snow storm that closed the school in question for one of our only two days to visit classrooms (!), the trip went very well.  Many of our teachers and administrators serve on ISACS visiting teams, and it is a great opportunity for professional development and to see other schools at work.  Naturally, it causes me to miss my own students and faculty.

Of course, I was able to enjoy a brief glimpse into Seabury life from a distance by checking in on Facebook and seeing photos from this week's Grudge Match.  Clearly, there was spirited competition at play in my absence, and everyone seemed to be having a great time.  The students are presently up 3-1, which means they should probably be crowned victors this year....though I have heard that Mr. Nelson just remembered that the Battle of the Bands counts for three points.....

We will have shortened classes today and begin the Battle of the Bands at 2:15 pm in the gym.  (We will also have a quiet room for students if they prefer to avoid Mr. Pulsinelli's thundering bass.)  You are certainly welcome to attend if you like.  Students will be dismissed at the regular time: 3:28 pm.

Our offices will be closed over spring break.  I hope you have a good start to the new season!

Yours respectfully,

Dr. Schawang
