Friday Letter

January 18, 2019

Dear Parents,

The uncertain weather projection has led to some changes in scheduling of basketball games, so please note the changes in the letter (above).

Congratulations to the Debate Squad for an impressive season of competition!  Our 4-speaker team (Josh Meschke, Lyle Griggs, Audrey Nguyen-Hoang, and Morgan Orozco) took 2nd place.  Chloe Akers and Hilary took 2nd place in 2-speaker competition.  And a shout-out to Ashlynn Dekat and Olivia Wilhelm for their State performance!

The school Spelling Bee occurred on Wednesday and was--as always--great fun!  I am always impressed by our youngest students who compete so fearlessly (and with exceptional skill) in front of the entire school.  We have a tradition of …

MY NAME IS REED DILLON, AND I AM HIJACKING DON’S USUAL FRIDAY LETTER TODAY, AND FOR A VERY IMPORTANT REASON…..

FIRST OF ALL, ALLOW ME TO GIVE YOU A BRIEF INTRODUCTION.  MY TWO CHILDREN STARTED SEABURY AT THE OLD CAMPUS.  I BECAME A TRUSTEE IN 2001 AND HAVE SERVED ON THE BOARD EVER SINCE. AS PRESIDENT OF THE BOARD, I OVERSAW THE DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF OUR CURRENT CAMPUS BACK IN 2002.  TODAY, I AM REACHING OUT TO YOU AS CHAIRMAN OF THE CAPITAL CAMPAIGN, A JOB THAT I AGREED TO TAKE ON FOR ONE REASON ONLY….. I LOVE THIS SCHOOL.

I HAVE WATCHED SEABURY GROW OVER THE YEARS.  I HAVE SEEN THE TYPE OF STUDENTS THAT COME OUT OF SEABURY: BRIGHT, ARTICULATE AND COMPASSIONATE YOUNG ADULTS WHO KNOW HOW TO THINK AND WRITE AND WHO ARE TRULY CAPABLE OF BENEFITING THE SOCIETY.  I AM SO PROUD OF WHAT SEABURY HAS BECOME, AND I CAN ONLY IMAGINE WHAT WONDERFUL THINGS ARE IN THE SCHOOL’S FUTURE.

HOWEVER, IF YOU HAVE WALKED THE HALLS DURING A BREAK OR ATTENDED LUNCH, YOU KNOW THIS CAMPUS (DESIGNED FOR 165 STUDENTS) IS BURSTING AT THE SEAMS WITH 223.  WE FIRMLY BELIEVE THAT THIS PROJECT IS NECESSARY TO PRESERVE AND BUILD UPON THE QUALITY OF THE EDUCATION THAT SEABURY GIVES TO YOUR CHILDREN.

AS OF TODAY, THE NUMBER OF PLEDGES AND GIFTS THAT THE CAMPAIGN HAS GENERATED STANDS AT $3.3 MILLION, 61% OF THE $5.1 MILLION GOAL.  THE VAST MAJORITY OF THOSE GIFTS HAVE COME FROM TRUSTEES, PREVIOUS BOARD MEMBERS AND ALUMNI PARENTS.  MOST OF THESE ARE PEOPLE WHO DO NOT CURRENTLY HAVE CHILDREN ATTENDING SEABURY.  WE NEED CURRENT FAMILIES TO STEP UP AND JOIN US IN MAKING A FINANCIAL COMMITMENT TO THE CAMPAIGN AND TO THE FUTURE OF BISHOP SEABURY!

WE NEED TO RAISE COMMITMENTS OF $2.1 MILLION BY THE END OF MARCH IN ORDER TO BEGIN CONSTRUCTION IN MAY.  THE BOARD HAS TO ACT IN A FISCALLY PRUDENT MANNER.  IT WOULD BE IRRESPONSIBLE TO BORROW THE MONEY AND SIMPLY HOPE TO PAY OFF SUCH A SUBSTANTIAL DEBT OVER TIME.  IF WE DON’T HIT OUR GOAL, THE START OF CONSTRUCTION WILL BE DELAYED UNTIL MAY OF 2020, AND WE WILL CONTINUE TO FUNDRAISE OVER THE NEXT YEAR.

TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE.  PLEASE CONSIDER WHAT FINANCIAL COMMITMENT YOU CAN MAKE OVER THE NEXT FIVE YEARS.  I AM PERSONALLY ASKING YOU TO STRETCH.  ASK YOUR PARENTS AND EXTENDED FAMILY MEMBERS TO PARTICIPATE.  ASK ANYONE WHO LOVES YOUR CHILDREN AND WANTS TO SEE THEM THRIVE IN THIS WONDERFUL SCHOOL.

I FIRMLY BELIEVE THAT, IF EVERYONE PARTICIPATES TO THE BEST OF THEIR ABILITY, WE WILL BE SUCCESSFUL WITH THIS CAMPAIGN, AND WE WILL BEGIN CONSTRUCTION ON SEABURY’S FUTURE THE DAY AFTER STEPPING UP!

THANK YOU, AND NOW I WILL GIVE THIS LETTER BACK TO DON....

…scheduling the Bee after lunch so the entire student body can watch, and their energetic and focused attention to the competition reminds me how much I love this school culture (a sentiment echoed to me by staff and parents every year).  Congratulations to Sean Ruddy for taking first place and Jason Meschke as runner-up.  Sean will attend the Douglas County Spelling Bee in the near future.  Our annual Geography Bee will occur next Wednesday.

On Wednesday night, we will offer a High School Information Night for current 8th grade parents at 6 pm.  This is an opportunity to get a new "tour" of the school as students move from Middle School to the High School college-preparatory experience.  Mr. Patterson and Ms. McCaffrey will provide important information and answer questions.  Mr. Patterson is also holding his College Information Night on the same night at 6:30 pm.  That event is specifically developed for juniors and their parents, but any parent is welcome to attend.

Every year, BSAP hosts a wildly popular student Casino Night, and it is scheduled this year for February 9th.  This is a perfect opportunity for parents to help out and spend some fun time with the students.  Parent volunteers are needed to deal popular casino games (you don't need any experience to do this) and to act as cashiers.  BSAP is also looking for prizes and refreshments for the event.  If you would like to be involved, please sign up at this link: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c094aa8ab22a7f85-casino.

BSAP is also planning a screening of the award-winning documentary "Screen-Agers" for Lawrence parents at Liberty Hall on February 20th, 6 pm.  The film examines the complicated relationship of families and children with social media, gaming, and online activity.  The film offers strategies for parents to help their children navigate the digital world.  After the film, a collection of guest speakers and students will be on hand to address the film and answer questions from spectators.  A flyer is attached to this letter.  We hope you can attend!  Mark your calendars!

And mark your calendars for this year's Seabury Auction: March 2, 2019!!

Stay warm this weekend!

Yours respectfully,

Dr. Schawang
