Friday Letter

January 10, 2020

Dear Parents,

I hope your families had a great break and enjoyed your time together.  Having the students back in the building is always a happy thing.  There is a lot of positive energy in the building, even with today's grey rain.

Congratulations to our Debate squad for their impressive success at the KSHSAA regional tournament over break.  Under the leadership of Coach Benton Bajorek and following a stellar season, twelve debaters will be headed to State competition next weekend.  Good luck to them!

We will hold the school-level Spelling Bee for our middle school students on Wednesday.  It is our annual tradition for the entire school to watch this competition, and it is always a pleasure to watch our students cheer on the young competitors.  The winner will move on to the county competition.

I trust you have been impressed to see the new construction coming together so quickly.  The work is presently on schedule to be completed on time.  We are taking advantage of this time of physical transition to assess our school practices and think strategically about how to better serve our students in the future.  In addition to the cyclical self-assessment that is part of our ISACS school accreditation work, we are also involved in school-wide strategic planning to create school-wide programmatic plans and a vision for where we want to be in the next few years.  It is a lot of work, but it will be exciting to see the positive outcomes in all aspects of our work.

Kansas winter weather is happening as I write this letter.  As the Week Ahead suggests, the calendar has been cleared for the weekend.  We regretted canceling the Seabury vs. Veritas game at Haskell tonight, but we don't want our families out on the roads.  Still, our basketball teams are off to a good season, and games have already been rescheduled.

Yours respectfully,

Dr. Schawang
