Below is an outline of topics covered on the final exam. You will have sample exercises for each exercise. Some of the exercises will be exactly the same as those on the exam itself.
WARM-UP
20 translation sentences. These will represent a range of grammatical constructions and vocabulary from the 12 chapters of Volume 1.
GRAMMAR
NOUNS: Case/ Number / Declension
· Explain what cases and declensions are. Give an example sentence illustrating the use of each case.
· Fill in forms of 1 noun from each declension.
· Give the nominative and accusative singular of 5 different 3rd-declension nouns each representing a different pattern of forms:
(eg. canis/canem; senex/senem; pavo / pavonem; tonsor/tonsorem; infans/infantem)
· Translate sentences and identify case, number and declension of nouns.
PRONOUNS: (I, me, to me, we, to us, us; you, to you)
· Fill in the singular and plural forms of the 1st and 2nd person pronouns
· Translate sentences containing pronouns.
VERBS: Person, number and tense
· Explain what "person" means; name the 3 tenses you've learned and give an example of how each is translated in English.
· Fill in forms of 1 verb from each conjugation in the present and imperfect tenses.
· List the 7 perfect-tense markers you've learned and write the 3rd person singular perfect tense form of several verbs.
· Translate sentences and identify the person, number and tense of verbs.
GENERAL AND MISCELLANSOUS TOPICS
· PLACET ("pleases" or "likes"). Translate sentences with forms of "placet."
· QUESTIONS: Translate interrogative words and translate questions.
· MAIN CLAUSES and SUBORDINATE CLAUSES (pp. 239-240). Translate longer sentences containing the conjunctions "postquam," "quod" and "ubi." Circle the main clause and underline the subordinate clause.
TRANSLATION
· Translate passages taken directly from the stories.
· Translate passages adapted from the stories (same vocabulary and topics but not taken word-for-word from the stories in the book).
