1. Julius said to Caecilius, “I'm worried. I was walking in the garden yesterday and reading a book. suddenly the ground shook very much. I felt the tremors. What were you doing?
2. “I don't understand,” exclaimed Caecilius, “I sent Clemens to my farm this morning.”
3. “Why did you leave the farm? Why have you
come to this house?” asked Caecilius.
4. Many Pompeians were running through the
streets. Women with babies were hurrying
through the city. Sons and daughers were
searching for their parents.
5. “I
made it to our houses, where Metella and Quintus were staying. Quintus sent me
to you, because we were all terrified.”
6. Holconius knew nothing about Metella. He did not care. Caecilius called Holconius “scoundrel.”
7. “You lost your house. I've lost my wife!”
8. By now, the cloud was very thick. suddenlt Julius exclaimed, “You heda for th house. I’m not well!” Immediately he fell to the
ground unconscious. Clēmēns carried Julius to the nearest temple.
9. “I thank you very much, because you have saved my life. I promise you freedom, because you have done very well!”
10. “Oh no! Caecilus is very foolish!” shouted
Julius. “Without a doubt Metella and Quintus are dead. I’m leaving the city as fast as I can. Are you coming with me?
11. By
now, most Pompeians were despairing for their city. multī perībant. Clemens, however, was not giving up hope, but
he stubbornly headed for the house, because he was looking for Caecilius.
12. caecilius was lying near death in the study. I half-collapsed wall was nearly covering him. Clemens gave his master some wine. After drinking the wine, Caecilius, caecilius gradually regained consciousness.
13. “Clēmēns, go away! I order you.

for quintus! Give this ring to Quintus!”
