Admission Policies and Procedures

Bishop Seabury Academy offers a challenging, traditional academic program in a safe environment that is defined by moral values and ethical behavior. Therefore, the Academy seeks responsible students with academic potential. In evaluating a candidate for admission, we look to those factors in a student’s background which will help to predict his or her success as a member of the Seabury community.

The curriculum is rigorous. Students must have the native ability as well as the desire to participate consistently in an academic program that will ultimately prepare them for a competitive college or university. Factors considered are a student’s demonstrated ability, his or her past academic performance, and the comments of those who have taught and advised him or her in school.

In addition, the Academy requires much of a student in terms of his or her personal behavior. It is a community where personal integrity, good manners and community responsibility are valued as highly as academic achievement. Applicants are evaluated on the basis of their character and contributions they have made to their school, their community and their home.

Bishop Seabury Academy seeks diversity in its student body and welcomes enrollment by students of any race, color, religion, national or ethnic origin. It does not discriminate on the basis of religion, color, gender, national and ethnic origin in administration of its educational policies, scholarship and loan program, and athletic and other school administered policies.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE
Applications are accepted throughout the year in all grade levels. The Academy, however, encourages families to apply early as space is limited. Most parents interested in enrollment begin the process by calling the school at (785) 832-1717 or emailing the admissions director to schedule a visit to the school. Typically, the prospective students are paired with a student host and attend three classes beginning around 10:00 am. Visitors then eat lunch with their host and parents pick up their child at 1:15 pm. During the prospective student’s visit, parents may meet with the admissions director to discuss enrollment and take a tour of the school. Once the visit is complete and the family decides to apply for admission, a completed application must be submitted.

To make a fair and careful decision about whether or not a student should attend the Academy, we need some factual background information. We obtain this information from the parents and the student’s current school. There is no standardized rating system and we consider a wide range of facts and opinions. We treat all information confidentially.

For this decision process, we need:
1. an application statement completed by the parents accompanied by a $50 application fee (download the application statement)
2. a questionnaire completed by the student (download the questionnaire)
3. a copy of the student’s complete transcript with results of recognized standardized tests
4. an English teacher recommendation (download the recommendation form)
5. a mathematics teacher recommendation (download the recommendation form)
6. a recommendation by the student’s current principal or counselor (download the recommendation form)
7. an interview of the parents and student with the Head of School

Any other information or recommendations the family would like to provide would be welcome. As soon as all forms and information have been received and evaluated and the interview has taken place, the family will be notified of the Academy’s decision. An enrollment contract will be issued to families whose child has been accepted. Student acceptances are conditioned on the successful completion of the applicant’s current academic year. The applicant’s final transcript must be forwarded to the Academy upon completion of the current academic year.
