Admissions
Welcome to Bishop Seabury Academy.
This school is a great experiment in learning, begun by parents and educators
who were dissatisfied with bureaucratic templates for shaping children and who
wished to design a school where teachers do more than present information,
grades, and diplomas. They wanted a school where students would be treated as
individuals with potential to be well-rounded, thoughtful, ethical beings who
would one day be powerful contributors to our society. They wanted a school
where “teaching the whole child” would be not simply a marketing catch phrase
but an urgent objective with tangible results. We are indeed an “independent”
school—proudly so—because our practices and methods are driven by the needs and
learning tendencies of actual children, our parents are active participants in
their children’s education, and our teachers are free to do what they do best.
Bishop Seabury Academy offers a unique school culture that is visible the moment
one walks through the front doors. Ours students are respectful, confident, and
broadly skilled, and they enjoy a rigorous curriculum and high expectations in
all areas of their education, whether academic, athletic or artistic. Small
class sizes allow teachers an unusual level of familiarity with the needs and
personalities of their pupils and assure that every student must be involved in
class discussion. Coaches do not cut students from teams, so all students have
the opportunity to compete and to demonstrate their strength of body and
character. Likewise, the arts program at Bishop Seabury Academy mounts six
ambitious productions, multiple concerts, and several visual arts exhibits. Our
school also supports a substantial program of community service work throughout
the year, and students are encouraged to take an active role in improving both
the school and the greater community of Lawrence.
Our students
come from a variety of economic, ethnic, and religious backgrounds. More than
25% of our students receive financial aid and merit scholarships. Eighty-five
percent of our faculty hold advanced degrees and represent an average of 17
years experience per teacher. Last year’s graduating class of 13 students
received 53 acceptances from 33 different colleges, and scholarships offered
from these schools totaled more than $2,000,000. All of the students who have
graduated from
